Chennai formerly known as Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is the fourth largest city of India. The city is on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. The 12.5 km long Marina Beach in Chennai, is one of the longest beaches in the world. The historic Buckingham Canal runs through the city. The 350 year old city still has much of its old charm. The city has much cultural heritage. The temples, shrines, forts and palaces of the city combine its past with present. Chennai is well connected by road, rail, air, and sea. It has an international airport and seaport. The historic town of Mamallapuram with its shore temple, about 62 km south of Chennai, is a popular tourist destination.
