The Rama shrine of Bhadrachalam on the Godavari, the holy ghats of Rajahmundry and the Satyanarayana Swamy temple of Annavaram.
Bhadrachalam's Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple, on the banks of the Godavari, is one of the most important Rama temples in the south, especially thronged during Sri Rama Navami when the celestial wedding (Kalyanam) is performed.
The circuit follows the sacred Godavari to the ghats of Rajahmundry — a focus of the Pushkaram river festival — and the Ratnagiri hill temple of Annavaram, where the Satyanarayana Swamy vratam draws families from across the region.
Bhadrachalam, on the banks of the Godavari, is among the most revered Rama temples in the region, dedicated to Sita Ramachandra Swamy. Traditionally associated with the devotee-saint Bhakta Ramadasu, who is believed to have built the temple, the shrine enshrines Rama with Sita and Lakshmana. The area is linked in legend to the Ramayana period, and the deity is worshipped with deep devotion. The riverside setting and the temple's storied history make it a cherished pilgrimage destination.
The temple's grandest occasion is Sri Rama Navami, when the celestial wedding (Kalyanam) of Rama and Sita is performed on a magnificent scale, drawing vast crowds. Pilgrims often bathe in the Godavari before darshan. Traditional attire is customary, and the temple involves some steps. Cooler months are broadly comfortable for travel. Nearby Parnasala, associated with the Ramayana, is a popular add-on, and the temple anchors a Godavari-belt pilgrimage extending towards Rajahmundry and Annavaram.
Rajahmundry, one of the oldest and culturally rich cities of the region, is celebrated for its sacred Godavari ghats, where pilgrims gather for ritual baths and riverside worship. The river is revered as a holy stream, and the ghats come alive during the Pushkaram festival, which occurs once every twelve years and draws immense congregations for holy dips. The city's temples, the majestic river bridges and its literary heritage add to its appeal as a devotional and cultural stop.
Pilgrims typically take a holy dip and offer prayers at the riverside, and boat rides on the Godavari towards the scenic Papikondala gorges are a popular add-on. The ghats are on generally accessible ground. Traditional attire is appropriate for worship. Cooler months are broadly comfortable for travel, while Pushkaram periods see very heavy crowds. Rajahmundry sits conveniently between Bhadrachalam and the coastal temples, making it a natural midpoint on a Godavari-belt pilgrimage.
Annavaram, atop the Ratnagiri hill near Kakinada, is renowned for the temple of Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy, a form of Vishnu revered as the lord of truth. The temple is especially famous for the Satyanarayana Vratam, a worship that devotees from across the region come to perform for wellbeing, prosperity and the fulfilment of vows. The shrine's distinctive design, incorporating symbolic cosmic representations, and its hilltop setting overlooking the Pampa river draw steady streams of pilgrims.
Many devotees undertake the vratam here, often to mark auspicious occasions, and darshan follows the ordered rituals. The hilltop is reachable by road as well as by steps, with assistance generally available for elderly pilgrims. Traditional attire is customary. Cooler months are broadly comfortable for travel. Festival days and weekends see larger gatherings. Annavaram pairs naturally with the Godavari sites and the eastern Pancharama temples, rounding off a coastal Andhra pilgrimage circuit.
