Sabarimala's Ayyappa temple, deep in the Periyar forest, is one of the largest annual pilgrimages on earth, drawing millions during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season (roughly mid-November to mid-January). Devotees observe a 41-day vratham and climb the 18 holy steps (Pathinettam Padi) to the sannidhanam.
The wider circuit honours the story of Ayyappa: Erumely, where the Petta Thullal is performed; Pandalam, the palace of his human upbringing; and Chengannur Mahadeva nearby. 🛕 Sabarimala Sree Dharmasastha Temple

The temple, on the banks of the Achankovil river, is revered as intimately linked to the deity's earthly life. Each year the sacred ornaments of Ayyappa, the Thiruvabharanam, are traditionally carried in a ceremonial procession from Pandalam to Sabarimala for the Makaravilakku, underscoring the town's enduring bond with the hill shrine.
Devotees visiting during the pilgrimage season often pause at Pandalam to seek blessings and witness the sending-off of the Thiruvabharanam procession, a deeply moving occasion. The temple is easily accessible and welcoming to families and elderly pilgrims, with far less strenuous terrain than Sabarimala. A simple, respectful dress code is observed. Darshan here follows classic Kerala temple customs, and as with many such shrines, men are traditionally expected to remove their shirts and wear a mundu, while women wear traditional attire.
