The presiding deity, Sarangapani, a form of Vishnu, is enshrined in a distinctive sanctum shaped like a chariot, complete with carved horses and wheels, drawn by the imagery of a celestial temple-car. Traditionally associated with the descent of the lord to the banks of a sacred tank, it is among the most important temples of Kumbakonam and is admired for its towering gopuram and chariot-form sanctum.

The hilltop sanctum is reached by sixty steps, said to represent the sixty years of the Tamil calendar cycle, and devotees come here seeking knowledge, clarity and spiritual guidance from this teacher form of the deity.
The ascent of sixty stone steps leads to the sanctum, a moderate climb that most pilgrims manage, though it may tire the elderly.
