The Pancha Bhoota Stalam are five Shiva temples where the Lord is worshipped as one of the five great elements. Four lie in Tamil Nadu — Earth at Kanchipuram, Fire at Tiruvannamalai, Sky (Akasha) at Chidambaram, and Water at Thiruvanaikaval near Trichy — each an architectural and spiritual landmark in its own right.
The circuit is a journey through the philosophy of the elements: from the mango-tree sanctum of Ekambareswarar to the Chidambaram Nataraja's 'secret' of empty space (Akasha), it rewards unhurried darshan. We can add Srikalahasti (Air) as an extension for pilgrims wanting the complete five.
🛕 Kanchipuram Ekambareswarar Temple (Earth)
Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram honours Shiva as the element of Earth among the five Pancha Bhoota shrines. The presiding lingam is revered as the Prithvi Lingam, traditionally believed to be formed of earth. A celebrated legend tells of the goddess Kamakshi worshipping Shiva beneath an ancient mango tree, said to still stand within the complex bearing fruit of differing tastes. The temple is one of the largest in the region, with a towering gopuram and vast pillared halls that reflect its long Pallava and later architectural heritage.
Darshan draws devotees to the earth lingam and the ancient mango tree, around which many prayers and rituals centre. The presiding lingam is revered as the Agni Lingam, and Shiva is traditionally believed to have manifested here as an infinite column of fire, whose beginning and end could not be found by Brahma and Vishnu. The great temple sits at the foot of the sacred Annamalai hill, itself regarded as a form of Shiva, with soaring gopurams and immense courtyards that make it one of the largest temple complexes in India.
Darshan combines worship in the vast temple with reverence for the hill, and the circumambulation of the hill, known as Girivalam, draws many pilgrims. The temple grounds are largely level, though the hill walk is long and better suited to the able-bodied. The temple is central to Shaiva tradition and is renowned for its golden-roofed sanctum and its association with the cosmic dance, drawing devotees and admirers of its profound symbolism and its distinctive Chola-era architecture.

Jambukeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikaval, near Tiruchirapalli, honours Shiva as the element of Water among the five Pancha Bhoota shrines. The presiding lingam is revered as the Appu Lingam, and the sanctum is traditionally noted for an underground spring that keeps it perpetually moist, a physical sign of the water element. A well-loved legend links the temple to a spider and an elephant who each worshipped Shiva here, giving the place its name. The temple is admired for its ancient Chola architecture and its serene, water-touched sanctum.
Darshan brings devotees to the ever-moist water lingam, and a distinctive midday ritual in which a priest offers worship dressed as the goddess draws particular interest. The temple is largely level and manageable for elderly pilgrims. The cooler months suit the visit best. Modest dress is customary. It lies close to the great Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam and the Rockfort in Tiruchirapalli, so the Water stala is easily combined with the delta's other major shrines on a single journey.
