The Uttarakhand Char Dham — Yamunotri and Gangotri (sources of the Yamuna and Ganga), Kedarnath (a Jyotirlinga at 3,583 m) and Badrinath (a Vishnu Char Dham site) — is one of Hinduism's most sacred and demanding pilgrimages, undertaken in the short summer season when the high shrines open.
The route winds through Rishikesh, Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Joshimath, with treks or pony/helicopter legs to the highest shrines.
